00:06:04.000 –> 00:06:11.000

That I wasn’t crazy that I wasn’t making anything up. And I had fairly advanced lipoedema at that point.

00:06:11.000 –> 00:06:21.000

I think it started when I hit puberty. So I have always had And notice noticeably larger limbs, specifically my legs.

00:06:21.000 –> 00:06:29.000

No matter how much I’ve dieted or exercised I’ve definitely been a victim to diet culture so I have yo-yo dieted my whole life.

00:06:29.000 –> 00:06:32.000

And I’ve lost a lot of weight, I’ve gained a lot of weight, I’ve done it over and over again, but still the size of my legs didn’t really change.

00:06:32.000 –> 00:06:48.000

And my arm, my upper arms as well. But as we, as it progressed and as I knew more about it, my physical symptoms, even with conservative management, were really starting to progress.

00:06:48.000 –> 00:06:52.000

So that’s not just heaviness in walking or running. But also extreme pain towards the end of it.

00:06:52.000 –> 00:07:00.000

So I think I got in with Chris just in the nick of time to start the surgical interventions.

00:07:00.000 –> 00:07:10.000

So I’ve had a 4 surgeries total. Started with my lowers, then we did the front of my thighs, the back of my thighs, then I had a nice big break.

00:07:10.000 –> 00:07:22.000

Also thanks to COVID and finished up with my arms last year. It’s actually A year to the day that I did my last and final surgery, which was on my arms as well.

00:07:22.000 –> 00:07:24.000

And, yeah, it’s Been amazing. It’s been a huge change in my life.

00:07:24.000 –> 00:07:52.000

A really knows full improvement in just being able to walk without pain. I think that’s the biggest one being able to run around and play with my dog and jump around and dance at festivals and going out with my friends and all the things that a person in her late twenties, well I guess it’s now mid thirties for me that I’ve always wanted to do more than I was.

00:07:52.000 –> 00:07:54.000

But it wasn’t easy. Not just physically but also it does take a huge emotional toll.

00:07:54.000 –> 00:08:10.000

Especially when we grow up in a really fat phobic society and a medical professional profession that doesn’t know much about lipoedema so you get a lot of it bias around just well just eat less just exercise more.

00:08:10.000 –> 00:08:15.000

And if, if you’re not successful in those outcomes, well, clearly in support with you.

00:08:15.000 –> 00:08:27.000

You’re not trying hard enough. So, diagnosis was a great explanation. But it’s also, there comes like a lot of emotional stuff kind of came up for me.

00:08:27.000 –> 00:08:31.000

I’ve seen it happen with a lot of other patients that have been diagnosed with lipoedema.

00:08:31.000 –> 00:08:36.000

You’re relieved to have answers, but you’re also, you’re very resentful.

00:08:36.000 –> 00:08:44.000

I was very resentful. About not catching it sooner and not having somebody especially in the medical context.

00:08:44.000 –> 00:08:48.000

Catch it sooner but I’m glad I got to it now when I did. And I’m really hopeful for future generations as we continue to advocate.

00:08:48.000 –> 00:08:58.000

And raise awareness for this disease. That people can catch it sooner. Thank you for sharing that link.

00:08:58.000 –> 00:09:04.000

So there is a case study if you want to go and see pictures of my. Post and preop legs.

00:09:04.000 –> 00:09:10.000

Also I’ve got I’ve documented those surgeries over on my Instagram. They’re in my PIN stories.

00:09:10.000 –> 00:09:15.000

Just the content warning there is a lot of them, like, and bruises and things like that in the post surgical bits.

00:09:15.000 –> 00:09:24.000

So if you’re squeamish, maybe don’t look at those. All right, I might move on to the odd stuff, Emily, if you want to change the slide.

00:09:24.000 –> 00:09:35.000

Ben, I don’t know if there are any questions before I move on to the next portion.

00:09:35.000 –> 00:09:40.000

That’s okay. I’ll just keep going. Any questions?

00:09:40.000 –> 00:09:45.000

Yep. Everyone, please tell me if I’m speaking too fast or not clear enough as well.

00:09:45.000 –> 00:09:49.000

I know. Take a deep breath and slow it down. So I’ve always been an artistic person.

00:09:49.000 –> 00:09:50.000

Oh, thanks, Libby. I’ve always been an artistic person. Growing up, I really did love art a lot.

00:09:50.000 –> 00:10:00.000

Hi.

00:10:00.000 –> 00:10:14.000

And I did study it all the way through to college. But as adult life. Got in the way, and they got busy and you know you want a real job to survive and thrive.

00:10:14.000 –> 00:10:25.000

It feel more and more by the wayside. But it wasn’t until around the same time that I got my diagnosis but also the first round of COVID lockdowns.

00:10:25.000 –> 00:10:33.000

I’m like, I really, I need to do something with myself. I’m inside. And I had never done any watercolor painting before.

00:10:33.000 –> 00:10:36.000

I had done lots of other stuff in college. But because I mean a very small type space, I didn’t have the space to spread out.

00:10:36.000 –> 00:10:46.000

To do lots of messy work with oils or acrylics or clay and sculpture or anything like that.

00:10:46.000 –> 00:10:49.000

So I decided to pick up a watercolor palette and try and teach myself using online resources that were free.

00:10:49.000 –> 00:11:02.000

Mostly from YouTube and Instagram. And I kind of never stopped. But as I was learning the techniques and how to, how to apply paint to paper.

00:11:02.000 –> 00:11:12.000

You know, you can only paint so many flowers and landscapes that you find for beginner tutorials and I’m like I just found my soapy.

00:11:12.000 –> 00:11:21.000

That’sinated with bodies and because at the same time simultaneously I was going through. Diagnosis and conservative management.

00:11:21.000 –> 00:11:25.000

And like grappling with things like, oh my god, I’m so sick of compression when it’s really hot or definitely during the aftermath.

00:11:25.000 –> 00:11:40.000

Of surgery in that recovery period and my changed body. And connecting with other people who had lipoedema, those themes just kept wanting to come out through my work.

00:11:40.000 –> 00:11:45.000

And yeah, I don’t think I’ll ever stop. Painting now at this point.

00:11:45.000 –> 00:12:00.000

I’m very excited. I’m about to head off to to Japan for an artist residency and part of my pitch was I wanted the time to explore different bodies that were marginalized, the lipoedema being one of them, and continue doing that work.

00:12:00.000 –> 00:12:19.000

So yeah, any other questions about that? I will say I did this in tandem with seeing a psychologist so I’m not I wasn’t just doing this all on my own.

00:12:19.000 –> 00:12:26.000

I’m seeing all the kind comments popping up. Thank you everyone.

00:12:26.000 –> 00:12:27.000

Yeah.

00:12:27.000 –> 00:12:30.000

Oh, we don’t have any questions so far yet at least just some lovely comments. Yeah. But we will keep it open of course, so if you do have any questions, feel free to pop them in.

00:12:30.000 –> 00:12:39.000

Yeah, I might go through some examples of my work. I do have my mobile phone camera here. I am going to turn on the light so we don’t have a cast shadow so apologies if my face can.

00:12:39.000 –> 00:12:50.000

Blows out suddenly. Now, if we wanted to. Oh, awesome, Patty. I wanna hear about your friend’s time in the residency.

00:12:50.000 –> 00:13:00.000

If we want to PIN my mobile. Screen to make it a bit bigger for everybody. That might be helpful.

00:13:00.000 –> 00:13:07.000

Yep.

00:13:07.000 –> 00:13:10.000

Okay, that one should be pinned down.

00:13:10.000 –> 00:13:18.000

Great. I’ve got a few different examples of some of my lipoedema theme work and these are throughout the years.

00:13:18.000 –> 00:13:27.000

This one that I’ve got here was actually commissioned by lipoedema Australia for lipoedema awareness month a few years back which is June.

00:13:27.000 –> 00:13:36.000

So it’s more of a cartoon. Cannot see the phone. PIN. Hmm.

00:13:36.000 –> 00:13:37.000

Okay.

00:13:37.000 –> 00:13:42.000

Maybe I will try to PIN it just a moment. PIN. All right. How’s that everybody?

00:13:42.000 –> 00:13:46.000

Is that nice and big?

00:13:46.000 –> 00:13:50.000

Or I had to PIN it for myself but no one else can see it.

00:13:50.000 –> 00:14:07.000

We’ll see how we got. Got it here. Can everyone see at least this beautiful?

00:14:07.000 –> 00:14:08.000

Yeah.

00:14:08.000 –> 00:14:15.000

I think what you might be able to do is It could be different for everyone’s screen. So if you wanna PIN a Lisa screen, you go to the top right of That screen and you can see 3 dots.

00:14:15.000 –> 00:14:19.000

And there’s a PIN option there.

00:14:19.000 –> 00:14:20.000

Maybe that might help.

00:14:20.000 –> 00:14:29.000

That’s a good idea. I can also stop the slide. And we’ll just so that we can just see the Lisa’s thing.

00:14:29.000 –> 00:14:30.000

Yeah.

00:14:30.000 –> 00:14:38.000

That should be a bit bigger. Yeah, I think if everyone hovers over. The mobile phone screen and has the 3 dot option I can certainly PIN it for myself.

00:14:38.000 –> 00:14:44.000

Yeah, so I’m looking at, I don’t think it will PIN for everybody unfortunately, so.

00:14:44.000 –> 00:14:56.000

If you want to make that bigger, feel free to PIN. That. But yes, so this one was, as I said, a commission for lipoedema Australia.

00:14:56.000 –> 00:15:04.000

We don’t have the 3 dot option. Okay. Hmm.

00:15:04.000 –> 00:15:13.000

Is it so really small for everybody? It’s not very visible.

00:15:13.000 –> 00:15:23.000

It’s just me, okay?

00:15:23.000 –> 00:15:24.000

Yeah, I’ll stop my video.

00:15:24.000 –> 00:15:29.000

Okay, what about if We hide your video at least. Do you wanna hide your video and then.

00:15:29.000 –> 00:15:31.000

That should be that’s big for me, the main screen now.

00:15:31.000 –> 00:15:34.000

Okay.

00:15:34.000 –> 00:15:35.000

Mandy says I can’t say anything.

00:15:35.000 –> 00:15:41.000

I can’t see anything. Yeah, I’m I think we’re the the main screen share that’s showing the lipid.

00:15:41.000 –> 00:15:51.000

Them a surgical solution logo is what most people can see or when I’m talking it’s just my blank screen.

00:15:51.000 –> 00:15:52.000

Thank you.

00:15:52.000 –> 00:15:56.000

So it might be the host. Sorry everybody for the technical difficulties but this is the important part we do want to see this one.

00:15:56.000 –> 00:15:58.000

We do want to see this one. Sorry.

00:15:58.000 –> 00:16:05.000

You might need to. Yeah, so if you can see the, there might be a PIN for everybody option because you’re the host.

00:16:05.000 –> 00:16:17.000

Yeah.

00:16:17.000 –> 00:16:23.000

Oh, that looks good.

00:16:23.000 –> 00:16:24.000

Okay.

00:16:24.000 –> 00:16:27.000

That looks good for me. How’s that? Yay! Okay, awesome.

00:16:27.000 –> 00:16:28.000

Yeah, sorry about that.

00:16:28.000 –> 00:16:32.000

I think. Right. We made it.

00:16:32.000 –> 00:16:33.000

Okay.

00:16:33.000 –> 00:16:40.000

Okay. Apologies for my workspace. It is very actively used in a bit scratched up, but yeah, let’s go and have a look at some other examples.

00:16:40.000 –> 00:16:48.000

So yeah, this was a commission, the lipoedema Australia, so they wanted to represent different types of lipoedema bodies from stage one to stage 2.

00:16:48.000 –> 00:16:55.000

That was from, 2021. Here’s one of my very early pieces when I first started her green hair then.

00:16:55.000 –> 00:17:06.000

So that was a self-portrait and it’s a Yeah, I have improved a lot, but just playing around and learning the techniques of what the colours.

00:17:06.000 –> 00:17:15.000

This is a value study that I did for one of my lipoedema portraits of, a lipoedema influencer from the States, Br the gene.

00:17:15.000 –> 00:17:22.000

So just learning where the shadows were in the image that I wanted before I actually made the colour version.

00:17:22.000 –> 00:17:29.000

I really like mythology in my art so a lot of my lipoedema bodies are represented by different mythological figures.

00:17:29.000 –> 00:17:33.000

So this is a goddess figure and it’s got some Very nice shimmers on it.

00:17:33.000 –> 00:17:42.000

I love shimmery paint I also go to a lot of live drawing events as well. Just it’s really good for my artistic practice.

00:17:42.000 –> 00:17:51.000

And I have run life drawing events in Canberra too and I make a point of trying to get marginalized bodies whether that’s last those people with lipoedema or anything else.

00:17:51.000 –> 00:17:58.000

So I don’t just paint, I also do use pencils and we will be using some pencils in the warm-up exercise.

00:17:58.000 –> 00:18:03.000

This is another really early one too.

00:18:03.000 –> 00:18:06.000

Just make sure I can see it, but this is a much more recent one. So lipoedema, surgical solutions.

00:18:06.000 –> 00:18:19.000

Do these amazing photo shoots. And I just I just had to turn one of the info photos.

00:18:19.000 –> 00:18:24.000

Into a muse. So that’s Lisa, I believe.

00:18:24.000 –> 00:18:35.000

So this is much more recent and probably more indicative of what my skill level is at the moment. This is another portrait, of another lipoedema warrior from Instagram.

00:18:35.000 –> 00:18:40.000

It’s on a much bigger piece of paper. And, sorry, this is Lisa Murray.

00:18:40.000 –> 00:18:43.000

I’m getting them mixed up.

00:18:43.000 –> 00:18:49.000

And adding some of those floral elements onto the thighs.

00:18:49.000 –> 00:18:57.000

But I’ve also experimented with much more bold styles as well. Drawing on the ink.

00:18:57.000 –> 00:19:01.000

And calligraphy.

00:19:01.000 –> 00:19:06.000

And then trying to go with something more realistic but I couldn’t help but put the stretch marks in gold.

00:19:06.000 –> 00:19:11.000

Metallic, I’ll see if I can get the sheen.

00:19:11.000 –> 00:19:18.000

To reflect for you. It’s not going to, we don’t have enough direct sunlight.

00:19:18.000 –> 00:19:25.000

Yeah, I love the idea of stretch marks being a decoration rather than a floor.

00:19:25.000 –> 00:19:32.000

So those are some I have so much other art, I’ve got some on the wall behind me that you would have seen in the intro.

00:19:32.000 –> 00:19:46.000

But today? Let me pull out what we’re going to do. Some I prepared earlier.

00:19:46.000 –> 00:19:50.000

Well, lecturing in there. So this is the warm-up exercise that we’re going to do.

00:19:50.000 –> 00:19:59.000

It’s just some stack rocks with opposing colors. So if you are going to paint along with this exercise, you don’t have to use colored pencil.

00:19:59.000 –> 00:20:06.000

You can use a lead pencil, a graphite pencil, whatever you want, if you don’t want to do pencils and just go strainy windy paintbrush, that’s totally fine.

00:20:06.000 –> 00:20:15.000

And then pick just 2 colors so I love the combination of an ultramarine blue with like a raw sea and a type thing.

00:20:15.000 –> 00:20:24.000

They’re on nice opposite sides of The color wheel, so there are contrasting colour. And this is just something that is really easy to paint.

00:20:24.000 –> 00:20:38.000

You get to watch all of the different pigments granulize and mix. And it’s really meditative but it’s also just something to warm your hand up before you actually start painting as well.

00:20:38.000 –> 00:20:49.000

And then this is the lipoedema figure. I did for this workshop. And we made it as advertiser Facebook friendly as possible.

00:20:49.000 –> 00:20:54.000

So she does have underwear on. I usually do do notes because I like the whole human body.

00:20:54.000 –> 00:21:01.000

I have pre prepared a sketch already for this so we’re not sitting here with me sketching it a lot.

00:21:01.000 –> 00:21:08.000

If you are feeling like this is all going too fast for you, don’t forget that there’s going to be a recording.

00:21:08.000 –> 00:21:16.000

So you can watch this whole through this thing the whole way through tonight and then refer back to it if you want to paint along.

00:21:16.000 –> 00:21:23.000

And if you do paint something I’d really love to see it. So if you post it somewhere, could you tag walk with freedom?

00:21:23.000 –> 00:21:30.000

Either on Facebook or Instagram or myself. So I’m art from a lease or one word or lowercase.

00:21:30.000 –> 00:21:35.000

So yeah, if you do paint something from tonight, even if it’s a bit later.

00:21:35.000 –> 00:21:42.000

I please tag me because I’d love to see it. I’d love to share it on my stories as well.

00:21:42.000 –> 00:21:52.000

Alright, shall we get cracking with the demo do you think everyone? What do you say?

00:21:52.000 –> 00:21:53.000

Sounds good to me.

00:21:53.000 –> 00:22:01.000

Do we have any questions before we start?

00:22:01.000 –> 00:22:06.000

Apologies for this cast shadow as well. Hopefully that’s just not getting in your way. So here’s a sketch.

00:22:06.000 –> 00:22:16.000

The next, but first let’s do some relaxing. Painting. So I’ve got some watercolor pencils here.

00:22:16.000 –> 00:22:23.000

So they do dissolve in water, but it’s fine to have normal colored pencils or a lead pencil as I said before.

00:22:23.000 –> 00:22:35.000

So what I like to start to do. It’s just start with a smaller stone on top. I’m going to be drawing this quite dark so it picks up on camera you did not have to push down this hard with your pencils.

00:22:35.000 –> 00:22:43.000

And then I start. Stacking shapes and I just like to get a variety.

00:22:43.000 –> 00:22:48.000

They don’t have to be complex shapes, they just can be very basic outlines like this.

00:22:48.000 –> 00:22:56.000

I mean you can put some like little crags and things in if you want that’s completely up to you

00:22:56.000 –> 00:23:10.000

And I like to put a few smaller ones so that they’re balancing.

00:23:10.000 –> 00:23:23.000

Have some rounded edges have some harder edges.

00:23:23.000 –> 00:23:31.000

That one looks like a pie. That’s okay. Alright, so the simple sketch is done.

00:23:31.000 –> 00:23:39.000

I’m just gonna use a fairly large pointed round brush for this one. This is the size 8.

00:23:39.000 –> 00:23:44.000

It’s a synthetic brush but whatever you have is fine. It doesn’t have to be this shape.

00:23:44.000 –> 00:23:49.000

I’m going to, I have already pre wet, you can kind of see in the corner here.

00:23:49.000 –> 00:23:56.000

Part of my painting palette. So before I start painting and I’ve also got 2 big jars of water.

00:23:56.000 –> 00:24:04.000

I’d like to get it nice. Wet because sometimes weather color paints can take a little bit of time to activate.

00:24:04.000 –> 00:24:12.000

I’m just popping it down in my mixing palette. I’ve got a pretty loaded brush here now so if I just go and swipe it that is a very concentrated blue.

00:24:12.000 –> 00:24:16.000

I think in the camera it looks almost black, but. I’m now washing off my brush.

00:24:16.000 –> 00:24:27.000

I’m tapping it off on some kitchen towel. And I’m just going to put my clean brush that’s loaded up with water and I’m going to drag it down.

00:24:27.000 –> 00:24:38.000

And that water is going to allow the pigments. To move and flow which I love.

00:24:38.000 –> 00:24:46.000

I’m using an ultramarine blue at the moment which is very granulating color so it’s going to, I’ll see if I can hold it right up.

00:24:46.000 –> 00:24:54.000

You can see how the pigments are separating on the paper.

00:24:54.000 –> 00:25:02.000

Now it’s up to you what colors you want on what rocks. I like to mix and match.

00:25:02.000 –> 00:25:08.000

I also like to think of a light source, so which side is going to be my light side? Which side is going to be my shadow side?

00:25:08.000 –> 00:25:13.000

But while the paper is still really wet, the lovely thing with water color is you can drop in another colour.

00:25:13.000 –> 00:25:19.000

So I’m going to grab my raw sienna. And you can kind of just touch it.

00:25:19.000 –> 00:25:26.000

And look at that expand. You can get so lovely balloons.

00:25:26.000 –> 00:25:31.000

And that gives you some really nice rock textures as well. And that pigment is going to continue to move.

00:25:31.000 –> 00:25:41.000

As the paint slowly dries and the water is absorbed into your paper.

00:25:41.000 –> 00:25:45.000

Okay, I’m just gonna clean off my brush. I’m going to do the next one.

00:25:45.000 –> 00:25:53.000

I’m not particularly worried about things bleeding into each other. I kind of like it when the pigments bleed together in these sorts of exercises.

00:25:53.000 –> 00:26:05.000

So I’ve got a nice dilute. Which means lots of water on my brush. The and just painting this in.

00:26:05.000 –> 00:26:12.000

Just doing some nice. Flicks and dragging. And then she’ll paint brisk gets dry.

00:26:12.000 –> 00:26:23.000

And has this water on it, especially if you have textured paper like mine, so this is cold press paper, you get something known as dry brushing where bits of white in the paper show through.

00:26:23.000 –> 00:26:32.000

And I’m actually going to mix together a little bit. Of my raw cienna with that burnt umber to get kind of a grey color.

00:26:32.000 –> 00:26:37.000

They mix to a really nice neutral grey.

00:26:37.000 –> 00:26:47.000

I’m just going to. Really place it wherever I fancy So I might pull it along the bottom of its ridge.

00:26:47.000 –> 00:26:58.000

And my paper still very wet so the pigment wants to move around a lot which I like.

00:26:58.000 –> 00:27:11.000

Good to move on to the next one. Either very vibrant ultramarine blue. Okay. I’m gonna continue to do it.

00:27:11.000 –> 00:27:19.000

Can I ask you if anyone else is painting along with us tonight?

00:27:19.000 –> 00:27:25.000

And then if I don’t see a question, cause I’m looking at my paper, let me know.

00:27:25.000 –> 00:27:26.000

Beautiful.

00:27:26.000 –> 00:27:34.000

Yep, I’m monitoring them. We have some comments coming through saying That they’re trying and doesn’t say me a painting and another one is about to start.

00:27:34.000 –> 00:27:35.000

How exciting.

00:27:35.000 –> 00:27:43.000

So. Yeah, we have a few people. Joining you on this painting journey.

00:27:43.000 –> 00:27:53.000

Now keep in mind I’ve been doing this a lot so I have brush control I know kind of like the load of witness on my brush and how much my paper that they use all the time can handle.

00:27:53.000 –> 00:28:02.000

And that’s just a matter of time. But one of the joys of water color is it can be pretty unpredictable, which I like.

00:28:02.000 –> 00:28:10.000

So sometimes it’s kind of just nice to Let things go to fate. So if something is bleeding up into here.

00:28:10.000 –> 00:28:17.000

Yes, that could be seen as an accident, but, you kind of learned to embrace and enjoy.

00:28:17.000 –> 00:28:21.000

Those differences.

00:28:21.000 –> 00:28:31.000

Hi Lisa, we have a question come in. Which is just wondering how you made your watercolor pencils into paint color

00:28:31.000 –> 00:28:38.000

Oh, okay. So I have, hold on, I’ll just pause. These were the color pencils.

00:28:38.000 –> 00:28:42.000

They’re designed to be soluble. So that’s not what I’m painting with.

00:28:42.000 –> 00:28:49.000

I just happen to have some of the same at the same colors. So see this blue line here. If I get some clean water.

00:28:49.000 –> 00:28:53.000

It’ll kind of dissolve away in the water. So they are wooded soluble.

00:28:53.000 –> 00:29:01.000

But the paint I’m using today are in. Palettes like this.

00:29:01.000 –> 00:29:09.000

So these are my like most favorite colors that I use all the time and I’ve got them grouped into these pellets here.

00:29:09.000 –> 00:29:16.000

And then I also have a ceramic. Mixing tray. I when I started before I had this stuff I used to use just a plate.

00:29:16.000 –> 00:29:24.000

Find it’s a lot easier to mix on this than on plastic.

00:29:24.000 –> 00:29:38.000

No, no magic technique. They’ll be neat though. Alright, I’m gonna mix together these 2 colors a bit more and I’m gonna make a really warm brown with a touch of blue in it.

00:29:38.000 –> 00:29:47.000

And that will kind of mute out the grey a little bit. So it’s kind of a muddy brown, which I know doesn’t sound very appealing.

00:29:47.000 –> 00:29:55.000

Let me see that color there. So it’s quite concentrated, but now I’ve just cleaned off my brush and I’ve wet it.

00:29:55.000 –> 00:30:01.000

And I’m just going to paint a super light wash.

00:30:01.000 –> 00:30:06.000

Everybody this whole stone and I’m working on

00:30:06.000 –> 00:30:15.000

It’s actually quite a pretty rock colour. Well, the color is almost backwards from other painting where the wide of the paper is what you use for your highlights.

00:30:15.000 –> 00:30:25.000

So you kind of paint backwards. So you paint from lightest to dark, whereas with most other paint mediums, you’re painting from dark to light so your paint your peek highlights over the top at the end.

00:30:25.000 –> 00:30:33.000

But here, if you want to get your widest white, it’s maintaining. The white of the paper so you kind of let it shine through.

00:30:33.000 –> 00:30:43.000

And what the color is a lovely transparent medium. So you can actually once these layers dry you can paint over them and they kind of glow which I think is quite magical.

00:30:43.000 –> 00:30:51.000

Just going to drop. A little more of the concentrated Rossienna.

00:30:51.000 –> 00:30:59.000

Get some speckles. I do like a speckly rock.

00:30:59.000 –> 00:31:11.000

I’m gonna get some more of the blue I think for my final one.

00:31:11.000 –> 00:31:19.000

Okay, I’m gonna let that little white piece show through for some nice texture.

00:31:19.000 –> 00:31:28.000

I’m gonna make a really dark shadow. Using mostly blue with just a touch of that brown.

00:31:28.000 –> 00:31:32.000

Just gonna pop it under here.

00:31:32.000 –> 00:31:38.000

Now I also have a heat gun that I use as a heat dryer because watercolor takes a long time to dry.

00:31:38.000 –> 00:31:46.000

And one of the hardest parts is you’re in the zone, you’re painting. And then you get impatient and you start painting something before something else is dried.

00:31:46.000 –> 00:31:50.000

And then suddenly you’re like, oh, it’s the paint’s done, not what I want it to do.

00:31:50.000 –> 00:31:55.000

So I find it’s a really nice thing that you can do a couple of minutes of set down.

00:31:55.000 –> 00:32:10.000

Go and do a chore or make a cup of tea Come back to a bit more, said at the side, but if you’re really in the zone, you can definitely use a heat gun or a hairdryer trying to get things that have a cooler setting because you don’t wanna scorch your paper.

00:32:10.000 –> 00:32:20.000

So I will be using that tonight just for brevity seek so we’re not literally sitting here watching paint dry.

00:32:20.000 –> 00:32:24.000

That’s once, yeah, go for it.

00:32:24.000 –> 00:32:25.000

No, no, please.

00:32:25.000 –> 00:32:30.000

We have another question. Come in. I’ll throw it in front. Which is did you paint during your recovery?

00:32:30.000 –> 00:32:36.000

Yeah, so, I did, but Only when I felt ready to and in very short bursts.

00:32:36.000 –> 00:32:42.000

So for anyone that’s gone through the surgeries, I know that you get quite dizzy.

00:32:42.000 –> 00:32:45.000

So even though like sitting at a desk, you know, you’re not really putting any pressure on your legs.

00:32:45.000 –> 00:32:58.000

It can be quite taxing just to see that for long periods of time. So I definitely started slowly and when I felt I started getting dizzy I laid down.

00:32:58.000 –> 00:33:04.000

Even when I was in hospital. I had a sketchbook with me so I’d be doing little sketches in bed.

00:33:04.000 –> 00:33:17.000

But I was very gentle with myself and made sure I didn’t have long painting sessions too soon.

00:33:17.000 –> 00:33:23.000

Okay, I’m pretty happy with that layer. I’m gonna go and get my heat gun and it shouldn’t make any noise.

00:33:23.000 –> 00:33:32.000

We did test this before and I’m gonna quickly dry this so I can paint another layer over the top of it.

00:33:32.000 –> 00:33:44.000

This is what they looks like. It was just from Bunnings.

00:33:44.000 –> 00:33:47.000

Whilst you do that, we have another question.

00:33:47.000 –> 00:33:50.000

Yeah, go for it.

00:33:50.000 –> 00:33:59.000

And that is. What is the best part about painting?

00:33:59.000 –> 00:34:00.000

Yeah.

00:34:00.000 –> 00:34:02.000

The best pop. That’s difficult, don’t make me choose. I find joy in different steps.

00:34:02.000 –> 00:34:12.000

There is certainly an ugly phase with watercolor where you’ve done a couple of layers. You’re like, it just doesn’t look right.

00:34:12.000 –> 00:34:19.000

What’s going on with it? So when you push past the ugly phase and you do like some final detail layers and then suddenly you’re like, oh, it looks like a person, you know.

00:34:19.000 –> 00:34:29.000

Oh, that’s what I had in my mind’s eye. That’s one of my favorite points because some also overcoming my own self doubt.

00:34:29.000 –> 00:34:34.000

I’m like, oh, maybe I’m not a good artist. Oh, actually, no, I’m better than I thought I was.

00:34:34.000 –> 00:34:42.000

It’s okay. I also love when I’m being more loose and abstract, so I’m not trying to mimic realism.

00:34:42.000 –> 00:34:54.000

And I do play I love playing with new paints it’s a dangerous hobby because you’ll just buy more and more paints and you’ll get sucked into the world of finding out where all these different pigments come from and all of their various quirks.

00:34:54.000 –> 00:35:06.000

But I love seeing what the pigments do when they’re being unexpected. Like even now, I hold it up, Getting these amazing bleeds.

00:35:06.000 –> 00:35:11.000

You can see how that’s. Colling into here.

00:35:11.000 –> 00:35:18.000

And I think that’s really cool. And you can see again the water has pushed back the blue.

00:35:18.000 –> 00:35:29.000

To create these little veins. Which I think is really awesome. And you can see lots of like granulization in that ultramarine pigment at the top.

00:35:29.000 –> 00:35:43.000

And all these little dots here. I think are really nice. Alright, that is nearly drive.

00:35:43.000 –> 00:35:44.000

Hello.

00:35:44.000 –> 00:35:49.000

And I’ll just. Good little more for final measure. And then we’re gonna give these rocks a little bit of shape and dimension and the cast shadow.

00:35:49.000 –> 00:36:01.000

Just while you do that, I just wanted to let everyone know that if you want to share your part, we would love to see it.

00:36:01.000 –> 00:36:10.000

I put a dropbox link just in the chat box. So you can take, and submit it there.

00:36:10.000 –> 00:36:16.000

We have a couple of instruction.

00:36:16.000 –> 00:36:27.000

Just while you’re dry.

00:36:27.000 –> 00:36:28.000

Thank you.

00:36:28.000 –> 00:36:34.000

Yeah, go for it, Emily. Awesome. Apologies. My dog has decided to sleep just there so you can see her fur.

00:36:34.000 –> 00:36:42.000

Yeah.

00:36:42.000 –> 00:36:54.000

Okay, this is just if anyone would like to share We would love to see it.

00:36:54.000 –> 00:37:04.000

You can choose. And he’s just a little, screenshots on, how to upload to Dropbox.

00:37:04.000 –> 00:37:09.000

Oh, I have to tag us on Instagram.

00:37:09.000 –> 00:37:23.000

Sorry, 5 from the lease or one word, lowercase and walk with freedom. Or one word.

00:37:23.000 –> 00:37:24.000

Yeah.

00:37:24.000 –> 00:37:26.000

Beautiful. I think this is all dry now. Feeling good

00:37:26.000 –> 00:37:27.000

Okay.

00:37:27.000 –> 00:37:33.000

So, yeah, if we make that big again.

00:37:33.000 –> 00:37:40.000

Lovely. Yeah, it is. Dog fluff in the corner. That’s nice and dry.

00:37:40.000 –> 00:37:47.000

I encourage you to touch it, to test. If it’s wet, it’s going to mix with the paint that you laid down.

00:37:47.000 –> 00:37:55.000

So what I’m going to do now is I’m going to grab My shadow color. But I’m actually going to make it really, really light.

00:37:55.000 –> 00:38:04.000

So I’m going to add a heap of clean water to it. I’ll show you what it looks like in a palette for comparison.

00:38:04.000 –> 00:38:13.000

Here’s my palette. That’s my shadow color. And I put a drop of that in here and then just added a lot of water to it.

00:38:13.000 –> 00:38:20.000

So it’s most transparent.

00:38:20.000 –> 00:38:25.000

And what we’re going to be doing now is called glazing. So I’m thinking about my light source.

00:38:25.000 –> 00:38:33.000

I think I would quite like the lights be coming down in this direction, so hitting these parts of the rocks that are not covered by other rocks.

00:38:33.000 –> 00:38:46.000

We can get a bit more complicated about like cast shadows versus ambient shadows and things like that, but that’s we’re not going to super really sick, but just going for Going with the flow.

00:38:46.000 –> 00:38:50.000

So I’m just going to grab that. Really light color.

00:38:50.000 –> 00:38:54.000

This one’s a nice sphere.

00:38:54.000 –> 00:39:00.000

Might make it a bit darker. I’m going to put a bit more shadow mix into that.

00:39:00.000 –> 00:39:05.000

I’m also underneath it. I’m thinking about the cast shadow.

00:39:05.000 –> 00:39:13.000

I know there’s a bit of a cast shadow. Under these bridges that I’ve created.

00:39:13.000 –> 00:39:21.000

This one definitely is gonna have a cast show that I’m gonna add a bit more dark blue to it though just to make it really strong.

00:39:21.000 –> 00:39:26.000

And this one’s.

00:39:26.000 –> 00:39:34.000

So I’ve done a line but I’m cleaning off my brush and now it’s clean and I’m gonna drag that and soften out the edge of the shadow.

00:39:34.000 –> 00:39:43.000

So it’s not as dark, starker at the top, but lighter at the bottom.

00:39:43.000 –> 00:39:50.000

I’m gonna go back into my light mix. And again, where those kiss each other.

00:39:50.000 –> 00:39:59.000

Doing a nice light. Should they? And I’m gonna clean my brush. Soften the edge out like that.

00:39:59.000 –> 00:40:11.000

And when that dries it’s going to look really lovely. Going back in with my really dark mix for this one down here Just so I can really define.

00:40:11.000 –> 00:40:22.000

Where one rock starts. Another begins. Really gonna try and preserve this area here. I don’t wanna drag shadow there because it’s the light will be coming onto it.

00:40:22.000 –> 00:40:31.000

But I will diffuse this shadow out. With my clean brush.

00:40:31.000 –> 00:40:40.000

I’ll pop another little bit onto this reach here.

00:40:40.000 –> 00:40:46.000

And that. Is the really quick warm-up exercise?

00:40:46.000 –> 00:40:58.000

So yeah, it doesn’t take much time at all. It will take some time to drive. I’m gonna put it to the side and let it dry naturally and we can have a look at but it looks like fully dry, water color does dry lighter than it looks when you first put it on.

00:40:58.000 –> 00:41:06.000

So that’s why we often like to do these layers. But you can see how it’s glistening in the light so it’s still super wet.

00:41:06.000 –> 00:41:10.000

How did you all go with that one?

00:41:10.000 –> 00:41:26.000

And do you think you’ll do it again later for when you just wanna have a calm moment?

00:41:26.000 –> 00:41:27.000

Yeah.

00:41:27.000 –> 00:41:31.000

We did have one question, which is We need to know the name of the little furball.

00:41:31.000 –> 00:41:48.000

Oh, her name is Mackenzie. There you can kind of see your face. She’s being very needy because I’m not paying attention to her but I promise you all she has been fed dinner she’s lying.

00:41:48.000 –> 00:41:49.000

Yeah, the

00:41:49.000 –> 00:41:52.000

We have a few comments that have come in. Oh, you’re reading them as well?

00:41:52.000 –> 00:41:59.000

Yeah, I’m looking at the screen now that I’m doing art. I’m just taping down this piece of paper.

00:41:59.000 –> 00:42:04.000

When you put a lot of water on paper, it does warp. So I find this helps.

00:42:04.000 –> 00:42:10.000

And it will still walk even with the tape but the beauty is if you let it dry with the tape still on.

00:42:10.000 –> 00:42:23.000

It will flatten itself out. Which is really nice. So this is washy tape. That I just put on very unevenly.

00:42:23.000 –> 00:42:30.000

But you can use masking tape just be aware you got to take it off really carefully because it can rip your paper.

00:42:30.000 –> 00:42:37.000

And we can see the whole figure there. So again, this figure I’ve drawn quite dark.

00:42:37.000 –> 00:42:44.000

Just so you can see it. What I usually do if I am doing a sketch before I start painting is I go over it with an eraser.

00:42:44.000 –> 00:42:54.000

You can get a needed eraser and kind of roll it over. But a normal rubber eraser is absolutely fine as well.

00:42:54.000 –> 00:43:00.000

I’m leaving, how are we doing for time?

00:43:00.000 –> 00:43:01.000

We’re doing really well for time.

00:43:01.000 –> 00:43:07.000

How much time do I have to do this? This is probably a more pertinent question.

00:43:07.000 –> 00:43:08.000

I do.

00:43:08.000 –> 00:43:12.000

Emily, do you have?

00:43:12.000 –> 00:43:13.000

Oh, hey there, Emily.

00:43:13.000 –> 00:43:17.000

Okay. Can you hear me okay?

00:43:17.000 –> 00:43:18.000

Yes.

00:43:18.000 –> 00:43:23.000

We’re doing really well. Now if you wanna spend like 30, 40 min doing this.

00:43:23.000 –> 00:43:32.000

Easy. And I am happy to answer questions as I paint because there will be stretches of time where I’m not talking.

00:43:32.000 –> 00:43:41.000

So please send them through and Ben can read them out to me. But the first thing I want to start with here is I want to start with skin and I want to really transparent layer.

00:43:41.000 –> 00:43:51.000

So lots of water in my skin color mix. So I’m currently mixing up mostly water, but I’ve got a bit of a peach color.

00:43:51.000 –> 00:43:58.000

I’ve got a touch of a red color. I’ve got a touch of that raw. Sienna I had before to add some warmth.

00:43:58.000 –> 00:44:12.000

Obviously there are so many different skin colors in the world so it really depends on what you want to do but I find the trick with skin color is the first layer have so much water in it so it’s it’s very transparent.

00:44:12.000 –> 00:44:17.000

Because the beauty of watercolor is you can build up your skin layers because our skin is made of layers.

00:44:17.000 –> 00:44:27.000

And you can add in things like blood vessels, veins, bruises. I do do a lot of bruises on my lipoedema figures because that was one of my big symptoms I used to get.

00:44:27.000 –> 00:44:33.000

The most spectacular bruises. Brush I at the moment because I’m gonna do a big area.

00:44:33.000 –> 00:44:40.000

I’m still using the number 8 brush. So we’re not getting into smaller detailed brushes here.

00:44:40.000 –> 00:44:49.000

Okay, and I’m even gonna add a tiny bit of my blue just to cool it down.

00:44:49.000 –> 00:44:55.000

I’ll just hold up my mixture.

00:44:55.000 –> 00:45:01.000

So that’s my skin colour mixture right there. And it has a lot of water in it.

00:45:01.000 –> 00:45:10.000

What I also like to do is have A red or a pink. With lots of water in it ready to go.

00:45:10.000 –> 00:45:19.000

Cause I like, I like the way that different areas of the body seem redder or flushed. So think of like.

00:45:19.000 –> 00:45:31.000

Natural points where you might be a little bit sun burnt or maybe you’ve got or maybe it’s part of the bruising and I like to drop that in while the skin colour is still wet.

00:45:31.000 –> 00:45:38.000

So let’s go ahead and start. I’ve got a purple lead that I use for this one, so it’s not going to dissolve.

00:45:38.000 –> 00:45:46.000

Like my, watercolor pencils before it’s gonna stay still for me. It will still be quite visible.

00:45:46.000 –> 00:45:58.000

Because I haven’t erased it and this is a very light transparent wash. Of course, you can, actually build up your layers or if you use a lot of pigment in your paint.

00:45:58.000 –> 00:46:01.000

You can cover up your pencil lines.

00:46:01.000 –> 00:46:13.000

And what I’m doing now is I’m just working section by section. Starting with the top, the back and the back of the arms.

00:46:13.000 –> 00:46:19.000

Trying to get a nice even coverage.

00:46:19.000 –> 00:46:27.000

Like that’s mostly quickly. Going to do there’s a tiny bit of the side of the face showing in this.

00:46:27.000 –> 00:46:31.000

As well. That’s why I love pointed RAM brushes. This is a really big brush.

00:46:31.000 –> 00:46:38.000

But because I had such a nice narrow point, I can go in and get pretty small areas with it, no problem.

00:46:38.000 –> 00:46:45.000

I’m gonna let that sit on the paper for a few seconds, so it’s going to absorb a little bit, but it’s not going to dry out completely.

00:46:45.000 –> 00:46:50.000

And and do this part. I’m going to kind of dance around so it’s all about timing.

00:46:50.000 –> 00:47:03.000

When I add in the blush colors, I don’t want the paper to be stopping wet because then that color I put on top of it like you saw with the warm-up exercise it is going to bleed everywhere uncontrollably.

00:47:03.000 –> 00:47:17.000

And while I love that effect, that’s not always. What we want. I want to have a little bit more control so I want the paper to Have a sheen to it but not any puddles.

00:47:17.000 –> 00:47:25.000

And I’m using cotton paper which I really recommend for watercolor. Because it absorbs water in a different way from you.

00:47:25.000 –> 00:47:29.000

You still your loose paper.

00:47:29.000 –> 00:47:36.000

Though I started on silly loose paper so you don’t have to. Go for the expensive stuff straight away.

00:47:36.000 –> 00:47:50.000

Alright. So, simple as that, we’ve got a really nice even layer. I have a very dilute what I would say is like a coolish red so it’s got a bit of blue in it but it is mostly border.

00:47:50.000 –> 00:47:58.000

So my brush now. So I like, I find that you’re thinking that because I’m very pale, I get a tan.

00:47:58.000 –> 00:48:04.000

And my tent looks like sunburn, so I’m just going to tap it. Into the shoulders.

00:48:04.000 –> 00:48:11.000

That’s where I get a lot of sun. And you’ll see it’s not traveling as far as the previous piece.

00:48:11.000 –> 00:48:21.000

I also like to tap it onto the ears. We often when we see lights being cast through ears, you can see that the blood vessels and they look pink as a result.

00:48:21.000 –> 00:48:26.000

Like to put some on the elbows if we can see them.

00:48:26.000 –> 00:48:39.000

Beautiful. And while we’ve been doing this This part I just painted has started to absorb the water so it’s pretty much ready.

00:48:39.000 –> 00:48:46.000

Going to put a little bit on the top of the hips. And see that’s not moving at all so my papers are already too dry.

00:48:46.000 –> 00:49:01.000

So I can fix that in a second, but I’m just gonna. I find. Along the creases and where we’re sitting a lot we get some redness Also around the joints, so that’s why I like to do the elbows and the knees.

00:49:01.000 –> 00:49:10.000

Now I’ve done quite pronounced. Overhangs on the back of the knees because I certainly have those even now post surgery.

00:49:10.000 –> 00:49:17.000

I have a lot of skin. Which I’m learning to love and embrace and that’s part of this process as well.

00:49:17.000 –> 00:49:24.000

So for these parts they’re not travelling so I’ve just Wash my brush. I’m just going to

00:49:24.000 –> 00:49:32.000

Blend the mean anything that’s not traveling the way I wanted to. Now at this point, you don’t have to do this.

00:49:32.000 –> 00:49:40.000

It’s completely optional. You might want to do some bruising. I think it’s quite It’s like paint on the skin in a way.

00:49:40.000 –> 00:49:46.000

I don’t know, I find it really fascinating. So I’m grabbing some of that raw cienna that I used in the Brock painting.

00:49:46.000 –> 00:49:53.000

But instead of the blue I’m gonna add a little bit of the red I just used for the blushing to it.

00:49:53.000 –> 00:49:56.000

So I’m going to get kind of a reddish brown.

00:49:56.000 –> 00:50:03.000

And I don’t know about you all, but I, when I was getting bad bruises, it was often my legs, cause I was pressed.

00:50:03.000 –> 00:50:10.000

Again, something. Right, bang my leg somewhere.

00:50:10.000 –> 00:50:16.000

So we’ve got that kind of warm reddish base. I’m just using some water to spread that one there.

00:50:16.000 –> 00:50:24.000

And then I’m going to get a little bit of purple, so I’ve got It’s a very blue based purple, so I’m going to add a little bit of red to it.

00:50:24.000 –> 00:50:29.000

Because I don’t want it to be quite that blue base, I want to be a warm purple.

00:50:29.000 –> 00:50:38.000

I’m going to put that over the top in just like one very strategic spot and it looks really dark on camera but I assure you it will.

00:50:38.000 –> 00:50:46.000

Fade as the weather color dries. I’ve experimented with, you know, the yellows and greens of healing bruises.

00:50:46.000 –> 00:50:52.000

I can tap away that if I want to lighten it up.

00:50:52.000 –> 00:50:59.000

Beautiful. Now I could bust up my heat gun now and do this, but I can actually do.

00:50:59.000 –> 00:51:06.000

As things are dry I can work on the here and I can work on the underwear. So The hair completely up to you in my original figure.

00:51:06.000 –> 00:51:18.000

Okay, for brown hair but my hair is always coloured so it’s Really up to you, but again we start from lightest Let’s talkest.

00:51:18.000 –> 00:51:21.000

Yes, so welcome, Libby. Thank you for coming as long as you did and There’s always the recording for later.

00:51:21.000 –> 00:51:27.000

Enjoy the rest of your night.

00:51:27.000 –> 00:51:32.000

Okay, I’m grabbing some very dilute raw sna.

00:51:32.000 –> 00:51:53.000

I’m just going to do a wash of her hair. Very lightly. This will not be the final colour of her hair.

00:51:53.000 –> 00:52:10.000

I’m gonna let that try. For underwear I think I did like a gray black color again very up to you a tip if you want to do white underwear you don’t just leave it white you do need to mix up kind of a very dilute grey mix whether that’s got a green tinge or a blue tinge to it.

00:52:10.000 –> 00:52:24.000

8 might look nearly invisible when you paint it on. But when it dries, the watercolor will kind of crisp up along the edges and it will actually look like you painted something there and it’s not just blank paper.

00:52:24.000 –> 00:52:28.000

Just 1 Si have to.

00:52:28.000 –> 00:52:33.000

Let’s get something.

00:52:33.000 –> 00:52:40.000

Just give my dog a treat. So she stops crying at me.

00:52:40.000 –> 00:52:54.000

We got any votes for underwear color in the chat. I’ll do it for you. What do we think?

00:52:54.000 –> 00:53:04.000

Orange, I like orange. Anyone else could any strong objections to orange?

00:53:04.000 –> 00:53:12.000

Oh, I missed that one. What was that last one that popped up?

00:53:12.000 –> 00:53:21.000

Black lace. Oh, decisions. I am going to do very colorful backgrounds for this one.

00:53:21.000 –> 00:53:22.000

So I might keep the figure a bit neutral and go with black lace. I’m going to use a color that’s called pains grey.

00:53:22.000 –> 00:53:29.000

Thank you, just got a comment that says, and all blow act like

00:53:29.000 –> 00:53:35.000

It’s a very popular watercolor, it’s blue based, gray, but it’s pretty much nearly black.

00:53:35.000 –> 00:53:40.000

But I’m gonna touch it into some of my, blue that I already had in the pellet.

00:53:40.000 –> 00:53:47.000

Again, I’m going to start with a really light layer. And because we’re looking at lace, often lace is pretty transparent.

00:53:47.000 –> 00:53:57.000

So we might even see some of the form of the. Peg through the lace which is nice This is going to be a very, very diluted.

00:53:57.000 –> 00:54:06.000

Leo. But this color can get dark really quick so do take a light hand with it if you are using a pains grey.

00:54:06.000 –> 00:54:14.000

Still using my big size 8 because we’re covering in quite a lot of ground but I will switch to a smaller detailed brush.

00:54:14.000 –> 00:54:18.000

In a couple of steps.

00:54:18.000 –> 00:54:27.000

Yes, so if you wanted to do all patterns on this underway, you could do this, let it dry, and go with the small brush with the darker concentrate of the gray enjoy your pens over the top of it.

00:54:27.000 –> 00:54:35.000

I think they’ll look really nice.

00:54:35.000 –> 00:54:44.000

Beautiful. Not too worried about things overlapping at the moment. I like quite a least style.

00:54:44.000 –> 00:54:50.000

Alright, this part is feeling pretty dry. Even the shoulders.

00:54:50.000 –> 00:54:58.000

So we might do another layer. So now I’m going to start looking at adding dimension to the body and through light and shadow.

00:54:58.000 –> 00:55:05.000

So my next layer is going to be a darker layer. And it’s going to start, I’m going to start putting it.

00:55:05.000 –> 00:55:11.000

The contours of the body if I feel like the skin tone overall is too light I can always glaze over it afterwards as well.

00:55:11.000 –> 00:55:16.000

So you can do things in a few different steps depending on how you like it if you want to lay in shadows now.

00:55:16.000 –> 00:55:26.000

You can, but you can always do it later. So my skin color mix. I’m now adding a thicker consistency of paint and less water.

00:55:26.000 –> 00:55:38.000

So I’m just going to quickly mix that up. So I have like a flesh tone color but I’m also adding some warm red Maybe the raw cienna.

00:55:38.000 –> 00:55:43.000

Some golden warmth.

00:55:43.000 –> 00:55:52.000

The tiny, tiny the tiniest touch of blue just to You need to neutralize that.

00:55:52.000 –> 00:55:59.000

Okay, and let’s kind of with the shoulders again. Sorry, when I’m thinking about the light source, I like to think that the light is directly on her back behind her.

00:55:59.000 –> 00:56:10.000

Like so it’s in the center of her back. Well, the center of her body. So all the shadows are going to be around the outside of the curb part of the form.

00:56:10.000 –> 00:56:19.000

So we know it’s going to hit. On these arms. There might be a bit of a catchlight so I’ve left with the blank space there.

00:56:19.000 –> 00:56:25.000

Good. Okay.

00:56:25.000 –> 00:56:28.000

Is that Chris?

00:56:28.000 –> 00:56:30.000

That’s very strange. Not sure who that was.

00:56:30.000 –> 00:56:38.000

I think that was Chris. I’m also just hugging the curves of the different folds of skin.

00:56:38.000 –> 00:56:47.000

Hi.

00:56:47.000 –> 00:56:52.000

Look at the spine. And under the head and have. Based being quite a bit of shadow as well.

00:56:52.000 –> 00:56:57.000

. One Okay.

00:56:57.000 –> 00:57:03.000

Do you want to meet Chris? Fano, Emily.

00:57:03.000 –> 00:57:04.000

I don’t have, control to mute people. But I’ll message Emily just to see if it’s coming through from Emily.

00:57:04.000 –> 00:57:11.000

You don’t have the function. Yeah, sorry. Official.

00:57:11.000 –> 00:57:15.000

Sorry about that.

00:57:15.000 –> 00:57:18.000

Yeah, and I’m sorry if you can see my dog blocking as well.

00:57:18.000 –> 00:57:19.000

Thank you.

00:57:19.000 –> 00:57:20.000

Yeah, trying to. Sorry about that. Okay.

00:57:20.000 –> 00:57:21.000

I’m cleaning off my brush, actually.

00:57:21.000 –> 00:57:25.000

No, we can’t hear any, dog barking.

00:57:25.000 –> 00:57:33.000

Excellent. That is good to know because she is going off. I’m switching to a smaller brush now.

00:57:33.000 –> 00:57:40.000

So this one is a size 6. So it’s 2 sizes down. It’s still fairly large.

00:57:40.000 –> 00:57:57.000

And in those areas I’ve just got a wet brush and I’m just softening those edges out.

00:57:57.000 –> 00:58:01.000

Are they landing them?

00:58:01.000 –> 00:58:08.000

I’m going to do the same for the legs.

00:58:08.000 –> 00:58:23.000

Hugging the contours of the body. Especially, I have a lot of blue skin on my legs from my surgeries, which is to be expected with the large volume that Curse to account.

00:58:23.000 –> 00:58:37.000

So I have lots of diverts and dimples and folds. I think that’s quite interesting texture and it’s like if you got cellular you might be familiar with like It little divots and things.

00:58:37.000 –> 00:58:42.000

So you can add some texture here as well. I’m also just cugging the curve of the curves.

00:58:42.000 –> 00:58:49.000

I’m under the knees and leaving most of your white space in the center with a light source.

00:58:49.000 –> 00:59:04.000

Would be hitting.

00:59:04.000 –> 00:59:15.000

Actually, want to add a bit more or have that reddish color. To the shoulders because as it dries it has lightens.

00:59:15.000 –> 00:59:24.000

Sorry, it’s going to look crazy and quite dark, but it will. Lighten up significantly.

00:59:24.000 –> 00:59:29.000

Believe me. So I’m just tapping it back in the area so I put it in originally.

00:59:29.000 –> 00:59:48.000

If I feel that they’ve lightened up too much.

00:59:48.000 –> 01:00:01.000

Is anyone else painting a figure that’s of themselves? Anyone else have a crack?

01:00:01.000 –> 01:00:02.000

We have someone message saying, yes they are.

01:00:02.000 –> 01:00:12.000

I’m exciting! I really want to see that one. Your best reference is yourself. The mirror or I have definitely like set up my phone.

01:00:12.000 –> 01:00:22.000

On a timer if I need a particular position that I wanna see because you can look at references of people doing all sorts of poses but

01:00:22.000 –> 01:00:36.000

Often the model the life models that you have the body diversity isn’t always there you don’t see a lot of people represented and just seeing the way our bodies hold shapes, cast shadows.

01:00:36.000 –> 01:00:42.000

It’s really interesting. I saw someone there saying they’re going to give it the go on the weekend.

01:00:42.000 –> 01:00:45.000

Love it.

01:00:45.000 –> 01:00:51.000

All right, while that’s all drying, I’m going to move back into the hair and I’m actually going to pick up a much smaller brush.

01:00:51.000 –> 01:00:58.000

So I can get some fine hair strokes out. So. For comparison.

01:00:58.000 –> 01:01:08.000

This is the 8 I was using. This is a 6 I just had then. And this is an 2.

01:01:08.000 –> 01:01:17.000

I’ve got even smaller brushes like. This one, which is a 0 point. Or 16.

01:01:17.000 –> 01:01:26.000

0 point 16 or something like that for tiny details, but I prefer the work a bit bigger cause I like a looser style but you’ll see people use tiny little brushes.

01:01:26.000 –> 01:01:32.000

All right, so I want to make a hair a bit darker. So I’m going to have a less watery mix.

01:01:32.000 –> 01:01:36.000

Of that Rossiana.

01:01:36.000 –> 01:01:51.000

But it’s quite a warm color and I want to add some coolness into it. So I’m actually going to grab that royal purple I was talking about before for the bruises.

01:01:51.000 –> 01:02:06.000

To get. A nice dark brown color.

01:02:06.000 –> 01:02:14.000

Come on, little brush and I do have some lines here to suggest the curve of the hair which I am going to Hello.

01:02:14.000 –> 01:02:21.000

And I am. Haven’t got a very but brush so I’m getting some really nice dry brush strikes.

01:02:21.000 –> 01:02:33.000

But we do want to preserve some areas of the hair with that color underneath for the highlights.

01:02:33.000 –> 01:02:47.000

And you can feel it with here all day. I can do layers upon layers upon layers. But, I find that way is madness often if I want something really detailed I’ll actually lit my watercolor.

01:02:47.000 –> 01:02:54.000

Paint drying go back in with a pencil. To if I want to get something semi-realistic.

01:02:54.000 –> 01:03:02.000

But when you’re doing more impressionistic expressionism It’s helpful to think of. Hair is like blocked or bigger chunks.

01:03:02.000 –> 01:03:10.000

And.

01:03:10.000 –> 01:03:17.000

And I’m just holding a very light touch onto the paper like I’m barely grazing it to get these little whispy.

01:03:17.000 –> 01:03:22.000

Lines.

01:03:22.000 –> 01:03:23.000

And I can, yeah, go for it.

01:03:23.000 –> 01:03:30.000

We’ve had a few more comments coming and they’ve said that they’re still on the rocks.

01:03:30.000 –> 01:03:31.000

For painting the rocks.

01:03:31.000 –> 01:03:35.000

Yeah, that’s so fair. Just pain along and take your time with the rocks and enjoy the process and come back to this.

01:03:35.000 –> 01:03:41.000

Well.

01:03:41.000 –> 01:03:42.000

Yeah.

01:03:42.000 –> 01:03:49.000

Sorry about that little interruption there and then We also have. Someone commenting saying that they will try this on the weekend

01:03:49.000 –> 01:03:56.000

I love that and I really look forward to seeing it. I think. It’s been really nice to be able to share online.

01:03:56.000 –> 01:04:06.000

With other artists and connect with other people with lipoedema or people who know have a loved one with lipoedema.

01:04:06.000 –> 01:04:15.000

That looks like different art styles because my way of painting is just one way. Let’s changing all the time, to be honest.

01:04:15.000 –> 01:04:22.000

All right, I’ve got some good suggestive brush strokes for the hair there and I’m gonna let them dry.

01:04:22.000 –> 01:04:45.000

Now I love Hello. That’s Chris said in the beginning. So I want to do quite a vibrant background and with the original piece I really I like an opposing color just like you saw with the rocks the the blue with the the burnt orange so the other opposites in the color wheel are also yellow and purple.

01:04:45.000 –> 01:04:50.000

To me that’s a dichotomy between like the lightness and the darkness that we all have within us.

01:04:50.000 –> 01:04:54.000

Plus they just look visually striking.

01:04:54.000 –> 01:05:08.000

So I’ve got a lovely warm transparent yellow. I’m just waking up in my palette.

01:05:08.000 –> 01:05:15.000

And I’m going to. Just use it in the well where I had that raw CNN, so we’ve got a little bit of that mixed in.

01:05:15.000 –> 01:05:26.000

I’m adding in lots of water. And I’m switching back to my big brush because I want to cover a big area.

01:05:26.000 –> 01:05:33.000

Sorry. Brush is lighted up. I’m going to hug the figure. And B.

01:05:33.000 –> 01:05:39.000

Semi careful to not touch anywhere where it’s wet. But if that happens we can fix it.

01:05:39.000 –> 01:05:48.000

It’s not a big deal, it’s not meant to be a stressful thing. I’m also as you can see not that concerned with staying in the lines.

01:05:48.000 –> 01:06:02.000

I don’t like to agonize. I’m using a tip of my brush just to get a bit more control as I get closer to the figure.

01:06:02.000 –> 01:06:06.000

I just wanna cover a look.

01:06:06.000 –> 01:06:12.000

This surface.

01:06:12.000 –> 01:06:15.000

Now I’m going to dunk my breath in my water. I’m not cleaning it off on the paper.

01:06:15.000 –> 01:06:24.000

I’m just getting a really wet brush and I’m gonna Drag this out.

01:06:24.000 –> 01:06:37.000

Swapping it back and forth. It creates like a nice ombre effect where you got a much lighter color in the engine and it gets more concentrated from where you first laid down the paint.

01:06:37.000 –> 01:06:42.000

Didn’t have to go all the way to the edges and I like quite.

01:06:42.000 –> 01:06:56.000

Brough. I’m just gonna now pick up a more concentrated version of that yellow. I might even add a little bit of that ready orange into it.

01:06:56.000 –> 01:07:06.000

And I’m just gonna. While it’s still wet. Get that lovely wit on wet technique and those blades which I am very very fond of.

01:07:06.000 –> 01:07:14.000

And drop it sporadically. Well, I just added way too much orange into my palette, but that’s okay.

01:07:14.000 –> 01:07:18.000

I will add some more water and some more yellow.

01:07:18.000 –> 01:07:29.000

Let’s see, much more orange. And I like these kind of rays or dots. Emanating from the figure.

01:07:29.000 –> 01:07:44.000

The mind even at the end get a bit messy and I love to do spiders where you Just get your paintbrush loaded up and hit it with another paintbrush and get these really organic drips and splashes.

01:07:44.000 –> 01:07:54.000

I’m a big fan. In my partner has to remind me not everything needs spatters and to put the paintbrush down.

01:07:54.000 –> 01:08:04.000

So because that paints so wet it’s going to continue to lighten and spread. That’s the paper dries.

01:08:04.000 –> 01:08:09.000

All right, I’m going to mix up a purple color. So I’ve got that royal blue purple.

01:08:09.000 –> 01:08:21.000

Which is very concentrated so I do need a light hand with it. Gonna take the tiniest bit onto my palette and add a lot of water to it.

01:08:21.000 –> 01:08:33.000

And then I’m going to do the other side. And remove the dog here that was on my brush, which is a hazard of where I live.

01:08:33.000 –> 01:08:36.000

Using the side of the brush.

01:08:36.000 –> 01:08:41.000

To get those big sweeping.

01:08:41.000 –> 01:08:53.000

Strikes down and then the tip of the brush to kiss and get a bit closer to the figure.

01:08:53.000 –> 01:09:06.000

This is also great for covering up the steaks if you’ve gone over a line.

01:09:06.000 –> 01:09:10.000

Again, I’m gonna whip my brush for that cleaning it.

01:09:10.000 –> 01:09:21.000

And I’m going to soften this edge out and create that ombre effect.

01:09:21.000 –> 01:09:25.000

And grab a bit more of a concentrated purple now.

01:09:25.000 –> 01:09:33.000

Oh, that’s very dark. My light in that. We adjust as we go.

01:09:33.000 –> 01:09:42.000

It’s going to you can also if you think you put too much paint on the page you can clean your brush off, dry it partially off on the towel and you can lift.

01:09:42.000 –> 01:09:47.000

Well, it’s still wet.

01:09:47.000 –> 01:09:51.000

And then wipe it on your paper towel.

01:09:51.000 –> 01:10:02.000

We can also kind of pull some highlights out that way if you want as well. That’s one of the many different techniques if you are interested in more the color that you’ll be.

01:10:02.000 –> 01:10:12.000

Using a lot.

01:10:12.000 –> 01:10:21.000

Some of my paper is dried here, so I’ve just got a re. Whether otherwise my pain is not going to spread like it has over there.

01:10:21.000 –> 01:10:30.000

Do a touch, touch more concentrated paint. Let’s not go as crazy as we did last time.

01:10:30.000 –> 01:10:53.000

You can also do this cool thing with some paints where you just get a wet brush with water. And when you touch the water to your wet paint here, the water actually moves the pigments around and creates kind of negative space blooms, which is really cool.

01:10:53.000 –> 01:11:01.000

You can also, do things like put salt on your wet paint and that the salt crystal dries up the water and it creates these amazing textures.

01:11:01.000 –> 01:11:13.000

And then when it’s dry you can just rub it off. Which I love.

01:11:13.000 –> 01:11:27.000

Okay, so where I’ve painted on my figure is pretty dry. But because I’ve got all this very a large amount of white paint in these very bright colors right next to her, I am gonna get my heat gun and dry this off.

01:11:27.000 –> 01:11:32.000

Before we keep painting the figure. Cause I really don’t wanna accidentally. Touch onto it and then have a big shoot of purple paint bleeding onto the figure right now.

01:11:32.000 –> 01:12:02.000

So. If you have any questions, please send them through and I’ll answer them while I’m drawing.

01:12:18.000 –> 01:12:23.000

Elise just. While you’re dry.

01:12:23.000 –> 01:12:24.000

Yep.

01:12:24.000 –> 01:12:37.000

I’m just going to remind everyone, please feel free to share your artworks and would love to see them, whether you did the warm up with the rocks or your painting along with Elise for the beautiful you can either click the drawbox link and upload a photo or you can tag us on Instagram.

01:12:37.000 –> 01:13:06.000

We’d love to see them.

01:13:06.000 –> 01:13:10.000

Those. I’m drawing, I’m just assessing, hmm, what are my next steps?

01:13:10.000 –> 01:13:23.000

I think I want to add some details to both underwear. I think I will. Treat them as a bit transparent so we can see the shape of the body underneath.

01:13:23.000 –> 01:13:33.000

So we will add some darkness and contour and shadows to that.

01:13:33.000 –> 01:13:47.000

Let me, very close to dry. Come with to hold this up closer to the camera so you can see the way the paints all bloomed and done cool stuff.

01:13:47.000 –> 01:13:57.000

And just having a touch test. Yeah. That’s good.

01:13:57.000 –> 01:14:06.000

Okay. So I want to get a bit more detailed. So I am going to be using my size 6.

01:14:06.000 –> 01:14:13.000

And I still have that pains gray mix that I did before.

01:14:13.000 –> 01:14:21.000

I’m going to add a little bit more but again very light hand with this paint because it’s so pigmented.

01:14:21.000 –> 01:14:27.000

So it’s still got quite a watery consistency.

01:14:27.000 –> 01:14:37.000

Alright, I’ve got 10 min left everybody. I’ll do my best. I’m just going to outline the contour.

01:14:37.000 –> 01:14:47.000

And I’m gonna blend it in like these nice soft edges.

01:14:47.000 –> 01:14:56.000

So I’ve just cleaned off my brush. I’ve tapped it semi-dry and I’m just gonna soften these edges right up.

01:14:56.000 –> 01:15:03.000

So that could that that lighter area in the middle that gives the impression of light bouncing. Offer the curvature of the bum.

01:15:03.000 –> 01:15:07.000

I don’t know when I saw where they say it.

01:15:07.000 –> 01:15:16.000

Very, very, medically anatomically correct here.

01:15:16.000 –> 01:15:22.000

Hi, we’re preserving that light space. So this is all just water and I’m just getting it nice.

01:15:22.000 –> 01:15:28.000

Blended and then because it’s still wet I can touch in this darker

01:15:28.000 –> 01:15:35.000

In here and it will travel for me. Let’s be most concentrated where I put it down.

01:15:35.000 –> 01:15:45.000

And it will not travel as far as the center.

01:15:45.000 –> 01:15:49.000

Lovely.

01:15:49.000 –> 01:15:52.000

All right, so we did a little bit of shadowing on skin. I think in this lighting it looks quite washed out compared to what it looks like to me.

01:15:52.000 –> 01:16:02.000

But what I will also do is add some cast shadows. So shadows are never black or gray.

01:16:02.000 –> 01:16:14.000

They always reflected from the environment off of them. So in this case, Popal and Orange, so I am going to use a purple based shadow that’s very watered down just like we did for the rocks.

01:16:14.000 –> 01:16:21.000

I’m going to take some of that purple mixture I did for this side, but so light, so transparent.

01:16:21.000 –> 01:16:31.000

And I will pick up my smaller brush. Little size too. Just get a touch of very watered down purple.

01:16:31.000 –> 01:16:43.000

And I’m going to add it. Some shadows and I find this is really where When I talk about the ugly stage, this is where it can come together and really pop out.

01:16:43.000 –> 01:16:50.000

And become 3 dimensional. So I am hugging a lot of my lines from my original sketch.

01:16:50.000 –> 01:16:55.000

And I’m also like I’m adding in a little circle of light there for the elbow.

01:16:55.000 –> 01:17:03.000

We know that the hair It’s gonna cast a bit of a shadow.

01:17:03.000 –> 01:17:12.000

We know that the face is gonna be in shadow mostly, there might be a catchlight on the cheekbone.

01:17:12.000 –> 01:17:19.000

Definitely cast from the back onto the arm.

01:17:19.000 –> 01:17:23.000

If I think a shadow is too harsh, I will clean up my brush and soften up the edges.

01:17:23.000 –> 01:17:31.000

So I think it is nice to keep some hard edges. Like I’m gonna keep that one there.

01:17:31.000 –> 01:17:37.000

Some shadows are quite hard.

01:17:37.000 –> 01:17:45.000

Let’s bit of a cast shadow on this fold in the back here. Be very careful not to touch that still wet area.

01:17:45.000 –> 01:18:03.000

Of the underwear, but I am gonna definitely get the cost shedder. Under the bum, on the folds and the legs.

01:18:03.000 –> 01:18:09.000

And you can really get lost in these details and I find that kind of help you with accepting

01:18:09.000 –> 01:18:16.000

The, you know, we are fed a certain beauty standard and we think we will never meet it even after we have surgery, especially if we have this skin.

01:18:16.000 –> 01:18:23.000

But at the same time, once you start seeing all these shapes and forms in art, They do become interesting and beautiful in a way.

01:18:23.000 –> 01:18:36.000

And I think that’s been really important for my own. Healing through this process. Even if it’s not my own body I’m painting like I certainly don’t have the same shape as this figure at the moment.

01:18:36.000 –> 01:18:42.000

Bye, I know I had those knees for example.

01:18:42.000 –> 01:18:52.000

And I just love painting them now and I actually think they’re really beautiful. And I don’t know if I would have quite gotten there.

01:18:52.000 –> 01:19:06.000

Without turning off my critical. I. Around what is beautiful, what is acceptable. There’s something about trying to Teach yourself how the paint and how the sea forms.

01:19:06.000 –> 01:19:17.000

Turns off that kind of critic part of the brain, at least it does for me.

01:19:17.000 –> 01:19:21.000

And if you can’t do yourself just yet, don’t be hard on yourself. If you don’t want to paint yourself, be not ready.

01:19:21.000 –> 01:19:35.000

Paint other people. But yeah, really it’s very easy to just paint. Conventionally attractive models and they are lovely to paint and there’s some very striking photography out there you can use as a reference but

01:19:35.000 –> 01:19:45.000

Gosh, I love finding people with non-standard bodies.

01:19:45.000 –> 01:19:48.000

Hey, I’m very mindful of time. So what I’m gonna do is I am going to take the tape off and hold it up a bit closer.

01:19:48.000 –> 01:20:00.000

Learning that this is probably not where I would finish. Oh, I’m gonna do some Screw it.

01:20:00.000 –> 01:20:09.000

But once I let this dry, I would probably go back in. And I would go back in and do more detail on the underwear.

01:20:09.000 –> 01:20:12.000

I do more detail in the hair. I do a few more layers of the underwear. I do more detail in the hair.

01:20:12.000 –> 01:20:18.000

I do a few more layers of the skin if I wanted to make a more tand for example. But right now I have a dripping wet brush of purple.

01:20:18.000 –> 01:20:24.000

And I’m going to hold it in the area. I want the bladder to be roughly in this messy.

01:20:24.000 –> 01:20:31.000

I’m just tapping with the other brush.

01:20:31.000 –> 01:20:36.000

Depending on how wet your brush and how big your brush is you get different spatters which I think is really cool.

01:20:36.000 –> 01:20:42.000

And I’m going to do the same for this gold.

01:20:42.000 –> 01:20:47.000

Then we will take the tape off and hold it up to the camera. And then I think I need to wrap it up.

01:20:47.000 –> 01:20:52.000

But first let’s do it. I don’t mind if some of the spot has gone up bigger to be honest.

01:20:52.000 –> 01:21:00.000

Sorry, my brush is much less wet now, so the spatter is a lot smaller. I’m probably getting an all over my desk.

01:21:00.000 –> 01:21:07.000

Yes. There we go. And if you get. Any spell that you don’t like, you can grab a bit of paper towel.

01:21:07.000 –> 01:21:19.000

Just go. Let it off. Like that. Alright, hold this on.

01:21:19.000 –> 01:21:26.000

01:21:43.000 –> 01:21:53.000

And you can keep going and going with watercolor so I think the battle is knowing When to stop.

01:21:53.000 –> 01:21:57.000

Alright, I might turn my main camera on.

01:21:57.000 –> 01:22:04.000

There we go.

01:22:04.000 –> 01:22:08.000

And did we have any closing questions?

01:22:08.000 –> 01:22:17.000

Thank you so much. All the kind comments everybody. Just going to turn this camera off now for now.
